Pho’ South King is just a block away from home and cool stormy week had me thinking about hot soup. So, we walked down the street for Pho’. Pho’ (pronounced ‘fuh’), is the Vietnamese version of noodle soup. You can get it with a variety of meats, beef being the traditional one. We both ordered the sliced beef and beef ball pho’. Which arrived a mere minute or two later.
As with any soup, for me it’s all about the broth. If that base flavor isn’t there I’m not going to like it. Pho’ South King gets it right. Their broth is delicious and flavorful. They bring with the soup a dish of bean sprouts and a stack of basil. You add them as you like. The beef balls were a little on the chewy side, but tasty. Often pho’ restaurants serve the thinly sliced beef on a side plate so that you can dip it and eat it a bit rare if you like. Here they just put it in, which is fine, but I prefer doing it myself. The bottom of the bowl was full of rice noodles and I couldn’t eat them all.
Pho’ South King isn’t a fancy place, but doesn’t charge fancy prices either. It’s really inexpensive. Our bill was around $13. What’s not to love about that?
Check out Pho’ South King if you’re in the neighborhood. It’s just up the street from Spices, another of our favorites. I’ll write about it next time we go....
