reviewing the food & entertainment pleasures of Honolulu
Oh it is serendipitous to be driving down Beretania Street at lunch time and see a parking spot directly in front of Mekong Thai Restaurant. This is a sister restaurant to Keo’s Thai Cuisine. It’s the same food, but a quite a bit less expensive. Instantly my craving for Evil Jungle Prince with Chicken kicks in. Amazingly, the restaurant is empty. The last time I stopped here for lunch it was packed. This makes for a very swift service. I ordered just what I was craving and brown rice. I love the brown rice at all of Keo’s restaurants. It’s got some red rice mixed in.
In short order my Evil Jungle Prince with Chicken, medium spicy, arrives ($8.95 here, $14.95 at Keo’s in Waikiki.). As always it is delicious. I quickly devoured half of this, my mouth burning a little. A good burn though. The waitress assumed I didn’t like it as I left half on the plate. But no, I was saving it to have for lunch today. Warmed up in the microwave it was as good as yesterday. As always, I really loved this place. I know there are a lot of Thai restaurants around to try out, but I know that any one of Keo’s restaurants is going to give me great food. So, why bother?
There is also Mekong II close by on King St. It’s equally as good. One of our frequent traditions with visitors is to go to the Halekulani for drinks and Hula and then to Keo’s Thai Cuisine. It’s has way more ambiance than the two Mekongs and you pay for it. And lastly there is Keoni, which is half Thai half Hawaiian/American. It’s a good place to go when not everyone enjoys Thai food.
