Here’s a disparate collection of memories.
When I’ve been in the newspaper and tech magazine, when I wrote for a newspaper,
and various other miscellaneous things I don’t know where else to put.
Our friend Jane wrote this for the Chronicle and my almost disaster is mentioned.
Susan used one of my photos from French Polynesia in this column
An odd melange of things. My diplomas, except H.S. And a couple of other recognitions.
Charles Schwab & Co, Inc. was very generous sending me to training many times. They found it best to give me crash courses in languages and scripting languages and UNIX. After being assigned a couple of failed projects, all my background and training led me to be part of the team that put Schwab's Trading system online available by a web browser. In 2.5 years our system went from 0% of retail business to 80%. We had lunch with Chuck.
Somehow one of my shows, my best one,
is missing. I know I had the program at one point. There are pictures.
It was A Coupla of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking
I was an entertainment writer for the college newspaper,
mainly doing TV reviews, but later dabbled in personal stories. I wrote under the name Scott Randolph.
I was in the local newspaper a few times.
This extensive article explains how my employer, Charles Schwab & Co, Inc., implemented Web Trading as we all called it. While there's a bit of hyperbole here it's basically factually accurate. We were given a very short timeline to get something up and running. Vince, a former boss, recruited me for the team. I had spent 3 years being moved from project to project. They all were tossed, but I gained lots of experience and training. Having been a Registered Representative on the phones with customers for over 2 years, and familiar with Trading I was a good fit. Within 2.5 years the service we built went from 0% of the Retail business to 85% of the Retails business. We then had lunch with Chuck Schwab in a conference room. It was a decidedly not fancy affair. Sandwiches if I remember correctly.
After I retired 3 of us were in Forbes ASAP as Schwillionaires. Schwab Millionaires.
I submitted a recipe to Sunset Magazine. I had made a Gourmet Magazine recipe low fat. They modified it slightly to make it even more low fat and published it. They surprised me with at $50 check and a Good Cook Certificate. The recipe is still on the Sunset website: https://www.sunset.com/recipe/very-low-fat-apricot-cheesecake
I was also in Gourmet Magazine. The Letters to the Editor at least
When I volunteered for The Names Project Memorial Quilt on Market Street there was a time when there was some controversy about using the quilt as a gay rights icon. IIRC Cleve Jones and the staff didn't like this. I wrote letters to the editor of the SF Chronicle and the Bay Area Reporter.
This is my Where's Waldo Moment. Find me on the cover of the Honolulu gay magazine DaKine
We met Beth Spotswood at an Olympic watch party hosted by Brian Boitano. She came to Oakland a couple of weeks later to write a feature about us!
This is the online version. The text is the same, but the website showed our picture. It's even a good one.
